Mitsuko Uchida, Instrumental Award/Disc of the Year Award 2008
Voting for the fifth BBC Music Magazine Awards will open to the public from today (Wednesday 20 January). Endorsed by five of the UK's leading music critics, in tandem with BBC Music Magazine editor (Oliver Condy), consultant editor (Helen Wallace) and reviews editor (Daniel Jaffé), 18 recordings in six categories will be presented for public online voting. The nominations represent the best of more than 1,500 recordings reviewed by BBC Music Magazine each year, and feature an eclectic array of household names as well as newcomers to the field.
The BBC Music Magazine Awards are the only classical music awards in which the main categories are voted for by the public. Voting is at www.bbcmusicamagazine.com/awards where specially-produced videos and audio extracts from each of the recordings are available to help voters. All who cast votes will be entered into a prize draw to win one of three award-winning Yamaha MCS-1330 hi-fi systems, with iPod docks and Yamaha Piano high-polish speakers, as well as all 18 nominated discs.
The variety of repertoire across the list of nominated CDs –grouped into Instrumental, Chamber, Orchestral, Choral, Vocal and Opera categories – ranges from classics such as Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Beethoven's Violin Concerto, Verdi's Requiem, to lesser-known gems, such as Szymanowski’s Violin Sonata, Telemann's Brocke's Passion and Carl Friederich Abel's The Drexel Manuscript for viola da gamba. These are represented by 16 different record labels, from EMI, Hyperion, Harmonia Mundi and Decca to the Mariinsky Theatre's newly-formed own label
